This is the ultimate review of the novel "The Spanish Love Deception" written by the wonderful author Elena Armas. By the book's name, you may have wondered that it is going to be very cheesy and have very cringy stuff. But let me tell you, Alan Blackford can come into my dreams anytime. This book is such a banger and is very beginner-friendly. Now you’re wondering whether it’s worth reading or not. Don’t you worry, I’ve got you covered!
The Spanish Love Deception Review: My Opinion
Overall, that’s a book I really enjoyed reading. While the storyline might not be that unique, it was still a very fun read and the spicy chapters were particularly good. Because I'm an impatient girl I just wanna read it so quickly I can't even tell you. It’s a very cute book.
Now let’s dive a bit more into what I loved and the things I didn’t like as much.
Things I loved about the Spanish Love Deception
I absolutely loved the character of Aaron. From beginning to end, Aaron Blackford is the ultimate book boyfriend. He is smart, handsome, and incredibly caring with Catalina.
There is a part of mystery about him and it takes a while for the reader to truly understand what he is doing but he is incredibly sexy. He also reveals himself to be a very sweet dirty talker, which we all love! Finally, while Aaron does turn out to be one of the perfect book boyfriends, he does make mistakes (especially at the beginning of the relationship) and acknowledges them.
As a general thing, I loved both character’s development. Catalina comes off as a very stubborn person at the beginning of the book and the more you read it, the better it gets and you start getting very much attached to her.
A similar thing happens with Aaron since he is very mysterious at the beginning and we don’t have much to go with but the more it goes, the more we understand how exceptional that man really is.
I also loved the fact that it was set in Spain as well as New York City. Most romance books are about finding love while traveling but it’s very unusual for travel to be included in this way and it was a nice touch.
I also loved the fact that Catalina was Spanish and Aaron American. It’s very rare for expats to be portrayed in books. It’s also not that often that we see mixed-nationalities couples. These couples are very interesting because they always face difficulties others don’t. This includes the barrier language (sometimes between each other but mainly with the family) but also cultural differences.
There were also a lot of little sentences in Spanish (don’t worry, it’s nothing that you can’t understand) which added an authentic touch to the story.
Finally, I did really enjoy the part about Lina’s ex, what happened between them, why this has shattered her life, and everything Aaron did after to make sure the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
Before I dive into that, I’ll put a warning that the next paragraph is full of SPOILERS!!
The way Daniel treated Lina is not right but more importantly, the way people reacted is not right. There are so many women facing this kind of unfair attention and being accused of flirting or something to get what they want. The author emphasizes the modern way of women's harassment in a very respectful manner.
This is not right and it’s time that the world realizes that no, we get where we get because we work hard for it and we shouldn’t apologize for it. It’s degrading to say that women get somewhere because they are with a man, especially when they have so much merit.
I’m happy to see that Elena Armas acknowledges and addresses the issue in this book.
Things I didn’t like about the Spanish Love Deception
The Spanish Love Deception is always described as a slow burn so while I was expecting it to be a slow burn, this was a very slow burn with a lot of repetitive thoughts.
The book is over 400 pages long so I was expecting them to go to the wedding around the 200th page. It was much further in the book.
The beginning seems to be dragging with a lot of ‘we don’t like each other, why is he doing that’. While I did like the character of Catalina in the end, she seems way too stubborn for way too long.
About the location itself, since the book is called The Spanish Love Deception, I was expecting more of the book to be set in Spain. It could have been even funnier than it was, especially if they would have stayed a bit longer. I also would have liked to see more cultural elements in the part about Spain.
The Spanish Love Deception Review: The Characters Ranked
Here are my favorite characters ranked by order of preference.
- Aaron Blackford, Of course, I mean, he is perfect.
- Rosie, She is just such a good friend and so funny.
- Gonzalo, We don’t hear about him much but he is just so funny and in love with his bride.
- Catalina. It took me a while to warm up to this character because she is so stubborn at the beginning but by the end of the book, I really adored her.
